SYNOPSIS

Winner of eight Tony Awards (including best musical), Spring Awakening is an alternative rock musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s provocative 1891 play. In late nineteenth century Germany, a group of schoolchildren explore their own sexual identities within a brutal and suppressive society. Unable to break through their parents’ and teachers’ infantilization, these students set out to explore what it means to love and connect. Part realism painting and part My Chemical Romance concert, this musical gives a powerful voice to those who have traditionally been silenced and provides a stark warning for those who look to strip away autonomy.

Ghost Light Award Winner

Miranda Ireland

Production team, volunteers, crew, and Phamaly staff were asked to nominate individuals from the cast who truly went above and beyond, exhibiting excellent care for the show and uplifting everyone who worked on it. Thank you, Miranda, for making people feel welcomed, valued, and part of something bright.

Upon winning, Miranda shared a quote:

“If I ever have children I will let them grow up like the weeds in our flower garden. Nobody worries about them and they grow so high and thick-while the roses in the beds grow poorer and poorer every summer.”

-Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening
