It is true, dangerous things come in small packages, and the explosive music of Wheelchair Sports Camp is no exception. The band was conceived in the mind of lead rapper, Kalyn Heffernan, in the summer of 1997, when she was invited to attend the 14th annual Colorado Jr. Wheelchair Sports Camp. Today, this gang of artists take to the stage, and to the streets of Denver, with a strong message. Kalyn, being a wheelchair user, shares her experience as an artist living with disabilities in the form of hard-hitting rhymes, all supported by a jazzy chorus of live and electronic instruments.
Impactful and genre-breaking tracks are just the beginning of Wheelchair Sports Camp’s interests. In their next artistic endeavor, the band is collaborating with Phamlay in our production of Alice in Wonderland. With a new, original adaptation of the play written by David Jacobi, Wheelchair Sports Camp is bringing fresh beats to the show. Everyone involved was ready to press play and bring down the house!
With everything changing due to the unexpected onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Alice in Wonderland had to be postponed until 2021. Having more time to work this summer, the artists of Phamaly’s original adaptation came together (virtually, of course) for a series of script readings and workshops. This unique recipe of events was the catalyst to creating a fully sculpted and utterly mad entertainment experience that, one day, will blow the minds of audiences in Denver.
To quench your thirst for now, the creative and talented artists behind Phamaly’s Alice in Wonderland have created a Spotify playlist for you to enjoy. No, it is not the music from the show (You gotta come back next year for that!); it is an audio tour of music that inspired the original soundtrack and production. Please, hit play, relax, and embrace the madness. Wonderland is waiting.
